Marcasite underwent a slow transformation (diagenesis) into goethite. This is a mineral of the class of oxides and hydroxides (FeO(OH) x nH2O + Al + Ca). The shiny layer around the goethite core is called "desert lacquer" and was formed over time, following exposure to the saving weather, the sand acting as polishing, gave it its shiny appearance. The desert lake layer is very thin and has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, the Goethite core has a hardness of 5-5.5.
