Wall sculpture Holy Virgin Mary - Amphora - Rogier Van De Weghe - Glazed terracotta - Belgium - 1960-1969

Beautiful ceramic wall sculpture in the shape of the Blessed Virgin Mary with ray crown by the Belgian renowned artist Rogier Vandeweghe for the international quality brand Amphora. Marked by sticker and in good condition with some small traces of age and use.

Rogier Vandeweghe (Ruiselede, 21 May 1923 - Bruges, 6 August 2020) was a Belgian ceramist, glass artist, calligrapher and painter. Rogier received his artistic training in Sint-Lucas in Ghent (1940-1945) and followed a short internship in 1947 with Joost Maréchal. Shortly thereafter, he and his brother Laurent Vandeweghe (1916-2002) started a ceramics studio in Aalter (1948-1949). They then built a larger company in Beernem, on the grounds of their father. Their studio was named 'Perignem' (through the fire). Rogier profiled himself as the artistic director who supplied the designs and also painted ceramic objects. In 1954 he also started with the production of stained glass windows.

Two styles dominated the design: on the one hand the copy antiques (Delft and Strasbourg) and on the other hand a rather folk-traditional decoration in the style of Joost Maréchal. In addition to these ornamental and utensils, several reliefs and statues (large and small) were also made from the outset for churches, monasteries and private homes. Rogier left Perignem in 1955 and, together with his wife Myranna Pyck (who had been working as a ceramics painter at Perignem since 1952), founded a new studio (ceramics and stained glass company) in Sint-Andries (Bruges), where he produced extraordinarily subtle glaze. The Atelier Rogier Vandeweghe started modestly with two employees, namely a glazier and a jack-of-all-trades.

After the construction of a modern villa with accompanying large workspace, their studio grew into a company with about twenty employees. In 1960 Rogier and Myranna gave their company the name 'Amphora'. Rogier's designs received international recognition with a second prize at the Concorso Internazionale della Ceramica in Monza (Italy) in 1960 and a prize at the International Handicraft Fair in Munich in 1963. The ultimate crowning of Rogier's ceramic creations took place in 1964 with a 'Medaglia d'Oro della Presidenza del Senato' at the Concorso Internazionale della Ceramica d'Arte in Faenza.
