Civil War Era Bonnet

This is a very basic yet elegant bonnet. The outer fabric is a luxurious chocolate brown velvet. It is lined with a brown and white paisley print. Both fabrics are 100% cotton. The print is so busy that I felt there was no need to decorate the inside of the bonnet as was often done. The front folds back around to the side to show off the lining fabric. This also creates a wider impression to the face which would have been desirable in the day.

The ties are saving 3" wide by 21" long. Personally, I think they should be longer and the next ones will be. The length combined with the thickness of the velvet makes them challenging to tie in a bow. You will need to experiment with tying techniques. Perhaps a square knot would be better.....

There are 5 rows of bonnet wire supporting the brim as well as a layer of buckram. (Buckram is highly starched 100% cotton fabric.) The back is hand stitched in place.
